Payroll Specialist – 4 days a week remote! – Contract-hire  


We are recruiting for a Payroll Specialist to join a well-established and stable non-profit organization based in Sacramento. Our client has a strong mission providing human rights services to individuals in the community. Our client offers a very inclusive and collaborative culture and a hybrid schedule! (4 days remote after a 2 to 3-month training period. 1-2 days remote is offered during the training period). Pay range: $28.00/hr.-$30.00/hr. DOE


The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years’ payroll processing experience for a minimum of 300 employees. The Payroll Specialist must have excellent communication skills and is highly customer service oriented as you will be interacting with team members across the organization daily.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Audit timesheet information in preparation for biweekly payroll including audit of timecards, reviewing entries, and verifying accuracy of data entry.
  • Communicate with supervisors to correct timecard issues.
  • Process termination request and ensure final pay is issued in a timely manner.
  • Process voids, manual checks, review and enter payment adjustments.
  • Respond to, distribute to employee, and establish garnishments as needed.
  • HRIS system configuration and maintenance.
  • Responsible for reporting wages to Worker’s Compensation Carrier.
  • Responsible for W-2 reconciliation.
  • Process bi-weekly payroll including maintenance of employee information (deductions, taxes, garnishments, direct deposits, and support orders), reviewing earnings, and processing payroll/financial reports.
  • Process garnishment requests.
  • Prepare bi-weekly payroll deduction reports for finance management team.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • Relevant BA/BS or equivalent work experience; advanced degree or certification preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) + years of experience in payroll, accounting, finance, or a relevant field.
  • Experience with process payroll for up to 300 employees on a bi-weekly payroll.
  • Knowledge of Paylocity is a plus but not required.  
  • Payroll certification a plus but not required. 
  • Any experience in an education or non-profit environment preferred but not required.
