Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Government Policy Specialist to join an advocacy organization, improving the frameworks for education within the state of California. The Government Policy Specialist will research, analyze, and propose policies in line with updated legislation to advocate for the position of the organization. This is a direct hire position with a hybrid schedule. Pay: $110k - $145k, DOE.
The ideal candidate will have a strong familiarity with Prop 98, the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), with experience in school finance or budget bills.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Research and analyze state and federal legislation impacting TK-12 education.
- Advocate organization stance to stakeholders, staff, and the public.
- Develop and execute organizational legislative strategy on bills, issues, and policies.
- Handle school finance or budget bills with a strong understanding of Prop 98 and the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF).
- Employ lobbying and grassroots efforts to support organization objectives.
- Staff, attend, and testify in committee hearings.
- Organize coalitions, draft bill analyses, and craft letters of support or opposition on bills.
- Represent the Association on various boards, committees, and advisory groups, building collaborative relationships with policymakers, government officials, and community groups.
- Other duties as assigned.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5+ years’ experience in school finance or budget bills.
- Working knowledge of Prop 98 and the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF).
- Prior experience in lobbying and grassroots advocacy.
- Possess extensive knowledge of legislative practices, public education principles, and the functioning of non-profit organizations.
- Proven ability to staff, attend, and testify in committee hearings.
- Skill in coalition organization and drafting detailed bill analyses.
- Capable of articulately composing letters of support or opposition on bills.
